Museum presents lunchtime history program

Thanksgiving is one of our nation's favorite holidays, but most people do not know the true story of how it began, developed, changed, and why. Morningside University emeritus professor Dr. Bruce Forbes has dedicated much of his career studying the history of holidays and will offer stories, historical evidence, and images in this History at High Noon: The Real History of Thanksgiving, presented Thursday, November 20 beginning at 12:05 at the Sioux City Public Museum.

Forbes is Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, Morningside University, now retired after forty years of full-time teaching there. He is the author of Christmas: A Candid History (2007) and America’s Favorite Holidays: Candid Histories (2015). The second book includes chapters about Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Forbes received his B.A. from Morningside College, M.Th. from Perkins School of Theology, SMU in Dallas, TX and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ. In his career teaching at Morningside College, he held the Arthur L. Bunch Chair of Religious Studies, an endowed chair, and also served as the Religious Studies department chairperson.

History at High Noon is a popular lunchtime photo-based program series held on the third Thursday of each month at 12:05 p.m. at the Sioux City Public Museum. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunches to enjoy during these free presentations.
